Lesson 8: “My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.”
This lesson reminds us, “Very few have realized what is actually entailed in picturing the past or in anticipating the future. The mind is actually blank when it does this because it is not really thinking about anything.”
This clarification about what the mind is doing when we think about the past and the future is helpful.
I see my mind always goes immediately into the past and future, trying to designate how I look at history and determine how I feel now.
And the end is the place we resort to trying to make hopeful possibilities in the future.
The ego focuses every last bit of strength on concentrating on the past and future because the ego prefers dealing with illusions, so the past and the future are the ego’s rightful territory.
Just remember that the past and future are those things we go to battle with because we feel judgment galore about them both.
We want to focus all of our energy on being in the present because this is where we can always locate God. The Present is when we accept all we see, and we are not at war with the picture because we forgive the present and heal our perceptions of the past and future.
I love that the Course is saying that we can have genuine peace, tranquility and certainty, and favor, as long as we stop resisting being in the moment.
The Course says that since the past and the future are illusions and not real, we are not thinking about anything when we think about them.
The Course wants us to get to a point sometime over time when we get to the place where we realize we are not thinking about anything when we think about the past and future, and therefore, they disappear.
The Course wants us to arrive at that place we realize that since we are not thinking about anything when we focus on the past and future when we do, our minds start to demonstrate a hint of shift and our resulting elevation.
The Course implores us to accept that the past and future are not real, and therefore, we are not thinking about anything when we think about them because they cease to exist when we allow God and the Holy Spirit to be in the picture.
The Course says that if this is true, if we are thinking about the past and future, suddenly when we accept, we are not thinking about anything when we think of them.
Our minds come closer to being healed because we are not sure of the illusion anymore when we remember that they cease to exist.
The Course says that the mind is blank when we are not thinking about anything. If the mind is blank, we can rush to God and invite God to occupy our minds instead.
We need to be willing to make sure our minds are healed of our attachments to the past and future illusions. The Course asks us to accept that the past and the future will never serve us since the Course says they are unreal, and when we think of them, we are blank.
When we remember we are blank, we are open to the possibility of being filled. When we accept we are thinking about nothing, we are available to supply our minds with God’s Purpose.
And when we accept we are thinking about nothing when we think about the past and the future, the likelihood is so much greater that we will not be upset at the world for its stupidity.
Seriously, we need to remind ourselves that the suffering in the world we find it is erased or at least lessened if we remind ourselves that we are not thinking at all when we think about the world.
Then the world becomes so much easier to manage! So this is such a special instruction to heal us.
The Course is right on the money on this lesson; It behooves us to help us be gentle with the world.
We need to focus on being in the Present and also focus on being in the Present always.
