Lesson 35: “My mind is part of God’s.  I am very holy.”

The Course is teaching us to be mindful of what is happening in our minds.  Observe it, forgive it and let it go.  Then we are taught to replace our old ideas of the ego’s making of judgment and emotional intoxication as we are all over the map with our complaints about what we see.  We are systematically being trained to pay vigilant attention to letting go of any sort of identification with what we think.  The reason this is is because the ego has only false notions and bases our mentality on lack, hatred, and our own self-deprecation.  What the Course replaces once we surrender these thoughts is an identity as the rightful heir of God and thus, the product of God’s energy and love.

The reason we want to identify completely as God’s children is because the ego’s attempts to identify us is based on a double edged sword.  There is no way to find peace with the ego’s perception because it is always in attack mode and always at war.  This  is why it is ever so important to do away with ego thought completely and let God’s knowledge be the only foundation upon which we base our lives.

We have to know that God is our Creator and He is in charge of how we must see ourselves.  The Course teaches us that God loves us completely and thinks we are always worthy of being loved.  Therefore, this identification with a God identity then declares that we are nothing but the most worthy of heirs to God’s fortune.  Therefore, there is no error within us in truth because God very specifically deemed that this is not so.  This is why we have to make time to find out how loving and compassionate God is so we can then use this as a means to define ourselves within His perfect image.

This lesson says, “Try to recognize that the direction of your fantasies does not matter.  Illusions have no direction in reality.  They are merely not true.”  We must realize all of the ego’s thoughts are unhelpful, whether they appear to be “good” or “bad” thoughts.  It all is not the elevated quality of thoughts we think with God.  Therefore, know that when we have desired ego thoughts, know that they don’t in truth have a direction (like being desired) because they are simply untrue.

As untrue, they mean nothing.  This is why we must focus our thinking on God thoughts entirely as much as we possibly can.  When we know we are lovable to God, this gives us distinctly healthy self esteem.  Then we can live in certainty because we know God gives us the only true meaning we can have.
